Dr. Adam Eaker, Assistant Curator European Paintings, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The ongoing renovation of the European paintings galleries at The Metropolitan Museum of Art has prompted a reassessment of institutional narratives about art history. One outcome is the two-year long exhibition In Praise of Painting: Dutch Masterpieces at the Met, which presents the museum’s fabled collection of seventeenth-Dutch paintings in a new light. Through sixty-seven works of art organized thematically, In Praise of Painting orients visitors to key issues in seventeenth-century Dutch culture—from debates about religion and conspicuous consumption to painters' fascination with the domestic lives of women. In this presentation, the exhibition’s curator will discuss the making of the exhibition and possible new approaches to the display of the permanent collection at The Met.
